This kitchen remodel was part of a larger remodel that included the hall bath project we have featured on another page. The remodel also included the installation of wood floors throughout the home.

We opened the kitchen to the living room beyond it by removing part of the dividing wall leaving the lower part that you see to the right.

By opening the wall between the living room and the kitchen without taking out the lower wall , it allowed us to have a small office space and an open kitchen floor plan.

There are many ways to create a more open floor plan for your kitchen. The obvious way is to remove walls between the kitchen and adjoining rooms such as the dining room.

All of these options used to create open floor plans work well to open up small or narrow kitchens to create better function and space to welcome family and friends.



Kitchen Lighting

This photo shows some of the new kitchen cabinetry and work area in our new open kitchen floor plan. The pendant lights in the foreground are over the desk area. The third one is over the sink area.

All of the upper cabinets have under cabinet lighting. New recessed lighting was also installed in the ceiling throughout the kitchen and adjoining living room area. All lighting included dimmers to adjust the amount of light to control the look of the rooms in the evening.

This photo shows some of how the kitchen floor plan opens up to the garden room behind it.

By having these open areas adjoining the kitchen it helps make for a more expansive feel to the kitchen.

Kitchen remodels that include creating open floor plans are some of the most popular and effective kitchen remodels.

Our new kitchen has large pot drawers on either side of the new stove for ample storage.

Pot drawers give you full use of the lower cabinet space. I always recommend including them in your new kitchen cabinets if possible.

In order to upgrade the kitchen cabinets and appliances we chose to install a granite style laminate counter top. The plan is to upgrade the counter tops at a later time when the budget will allow.

Many times this is a good way to stretch your budget without losing quality or function in your cabinets and appliances.
