Historic IKEA Kitchen

Click For Enlarged Kitchen Photos
This kitchen suffered from being cramped for space, dark and worn out from many years of service.
The home was built around eighty years ago which is old by Phoenix standards. It is located in the F.Q. story Historic Neighborhood in central Phoenix.
Our goal was to expand the kitchen floorplan to create more storage and working area.
Historic Kitchen Remodel
This before view shows how cramped the space was before removing this wall dividing the small kitchen from the existing laundry room.
Our plan was to create a closet for a stacked washer/dryer unit and open this cramped space up to make a workable area out of it.
Many of the valley's older homes benefit greatly from creating open kitchen floor plans. This kitchen is an excellent example of a expanded kitchen floor plan.
Kitchen Remodel Before
You are looking at the extent of the original kitchen counter area prior to creating the open kitchen floorplan. The original cabinets on either side of the counters didn't help by being so low to the small amount of counter space there was.
You will also notice how the after photos have so much more light after the room was opened up.
Kitchen Remodel After
Our new kitchen features a total IKEA build out. The cabinets, countertops, farm sink and appliances were all purchased by the homeowner for us to install. The use of IKEA cabinets maximized our homeowners budget and create a great looking kitchen for this unique home.
The owner had us install an under counter oven at the far end of the counter to use in place of their historic Wedgewood stove. The stove had been rebuilt and the owner planed on using the burners for stove top cooking.
This kitchen has been on the F.Q. Story Historic Home Tour.
FQ Story Kitchen Remodel
The kitchen was an extremely narrow galley kitchen prior to opening up the floor plan.
We maximized this space by sinking both the refrigerator and the antique stove into the walls and removing the wall dividing the kitchen from the original laundry.
This photo shows the new wood floor that we installed throughout the new kitchen. You will also notice the new pantry at the deep end of the new butcher block counter top just short of the new enclosure for the laundry equipment.
Kitchen Remodel
This unique ironing board cabinet feature comes in handy next to the new kitchen laundry area.
The new pantry area gave our homeowner the needed storage space for both laundry items and kitchen necessities.
Our goal was met in opening the kitchen floor plan was to offer more space without loosing working laundry area.
Kitchen Laundry
Not an inch was wasted creating this compact laundry area.
Kitchen Sink
Sunlight and space are the new order of the day in our new open kitchen. The farm sink is a nice complement to the original windows with the unique spice cabinet between them.
Built in kitchen Appliances
These built in appliances in their wall recessed areas were not usual in any manor but they did open the kitchen up to create a space that works.
Historic Kitchen Stove
We created this tiled wall recess for this unique stove so that it could be used without creating a mess on the walls. The vent was not installed yet in this photo.
Thanks for taking the time to see our historic IKEA kitchen with it's new open floor plan. I thought it was a unique contrast to the mid century modern IKEA kitchen that we also have featured on our projects pages.

Owners Recommendation
Homework Remodels paid great care and attention to details in the recent remodeling of my kitchen All work was performed within the time frames stated and the agreed upon budget. He was very cooperative with the changes I made, and also came up with a number of creative suggestions and alternatives in keeping with the historic flavor of my home. His open kitchen floor plan design made the most of my limited space and I am really pleased with the results. Additionally, I would like to comment on the fact that I was out of town during the final completion of the project and had total trust in leaving my house key with him. What a pleasure it was to come home to my new kitchen remodel.
