Mid Century Ranch Modern Transformation

Our goal was to take this unworkable ranch home galley kitchen and transform it into a modern style kitchen worthy of homeowners who love mid century modern homes.
Yuri And his wife Linda had reworked most of the rest of the house so that it suited their urban lifestyle. They had already refurbished their original colored concrete floors, remodeled the bathroom including a new concrete counter top.
They hoped that we could partner with their "do it yourself" focus to accomplish a new mid century modern kitchen.
Workable Space VS Before

Yuri hoped they he could work with us to remodel his kitchen having us do the technical parts while he did some of the do-it -yourself parts.
Before
Yuri hoped that we could come up with a design and floor plan for this worn out kitchen space and help him create the mid century modern space he hoped to accomplish.

Sleek Modernism
We removed the plaster from the block walls to expose the block wall construction. The object was to highlight the elements used in the construction of the kitchen.

Galley Kitchen Before

Yuri And his wife Linda had already reworked most of the rest of the house themselves so that it suited their urban lifestyle. They had refurbished their original colored concrete floors, remodeled the bathroom including a new concrete counter top and had a new air conditioning unit. installed.
New Kitchen Sink
The new counter top was from IKEA the same as the cabinets.
Our homeowners chose to buy and assemble the cabinets from IKEA in order to get the most bang for their buck. Realizing that they were in over their heads on the technical aspects of the kitchen remodel, we came in to remove the soffits, install code compliant electrical and plumbing and install the cabinets and counter tops.
DIY homeowner and Professional Contractor Synergy
With our design, remodeling expertise and a little sweat equity from the homeowners, we were able to put together this sharp looking and functional modern style kitchen on a modest budget.

Homeowner's Recommendation
Unlike many (most?) general contractors in town, Homework owner Steve and his staff really 'get' the MCM aesthetic and the challenges associated with remodeling older homes and their hidden 'secrets'. In addition, they work with a group of sub contractor (electricians, plumbers, HVAC, carpenters who also 'get it'.
Better yet, Steve is willing to work with his clients to determine the scope of work. This is perfect for weekend warriors like me, who want to do some of the the work themselves, but want a little help with things like rewiring. Homework was able to seamlessly coordinate ther various subs to ensure the the remodel went as smoothly and quickly as possible.
Also, Steve is a great design resource. He has a lot of experience working in older homes and with limited budgets, so can come up with solutions to problems that many contractors would shirk from. Our kitchen is a case in point. Steve was able to help us change a 1970s kitchen remodel disaster into an amazingly functional and sleek looking modern kitchen that still manages to respect (and even accentuate) the mid-century bones of our 1951 ranch.
