Fireplace Makeover

Click For Enlarged Photos
This is a great example of how a room can be brought to life with a fireplace makeover.
This living room has a vaulted ceiling and great lighting. The problem was that the fireplace looked like an afterthought instead of a feature.
Our homeowners wanted to create a focal point for the room, incorporating their flat screen TV and building their TV and Sound components into new custom cabinetry.
You can see that Lisa LaPorta from HGTV is right at home on our new built in TV.
Before
This photo will give you a good idea of why the homeowners wanted to upgrade their fireplace and create a focal point for this beautiful room.
The mantle looks out of place and dwarfed by the scale of the room, and there was no way to balance the wall with ordinary cabinetry.
Special Features
All of the cable TV, DVD and sound system components are located in the closed cabinet to the right of the new stacked stone fireplace. The wiring is built into the cabinet and fireplace to accommodate the TV and stereo speakers.
We installed a special remote control receiver in with the TV that will control all of the built-in components without opening the cabinet.
Our Homeowner wrote:
We're delighted with our new fireplace and entertainment center. The stonework and lighted cabinets are beautiful. Steve and Homework Remodels took our vision and executed it flawlessly. It's exactly the focal point we wanted for our great room. -- K. Morrison and R. Hansen, homeowners.
Recessed TV
This photo shows the recessed area that will house the TV.
We built a false front on the existing fireplace to increase it's mass and create the space for this built in TV and its wiring. The recessed area was later painted flat black to blend with the TV.
Stacked Stone
Our new fireplace was finished with travertine stone using a stacked stone technique. This is just one of many types of stone that can be used to create custom stacked stone fireplaces.
Our homeowners wanted the new fireplace to have a natural stone finish that wouldn't collect soot or dust and be easy to clean. The stones were hand cut from varied thicknesses of travertine tile to accomplish this textured finish.
Custom Cabinetry
We designed and built two of these custom cabinets to complement the new stacked stone fireplace. Each cabinet has built-in lighting and wiring for the Bose sound system. The lower base plate is specially built to accommodate the base speaker for the sound system. The speaker is inside the cabinet set up to direct the sound through the louvers cut into the base plate.
